NY Apple store
snowman
[info]okinawa_teru
It was drizzling in the morning...and cold....as if sky's sprinkling iced water droplets on earth! But we still went ahead with our plan..the NY Apple Store!

This street was filled with shops of branded goods...but the only one i really wanted to see was this...haiz...no fate...nothing was on display cos they have an event today loh!!

Anyways, walking in the rain, we reached the apple store ard 15 mins walk from our hotel...it was a glass cube with the apple sign in the centre.. the shop itself was underground...the was along queue to go in...so we decided to take a pic outside the store....and not join the queue.

we went into this toy store that's next to it instead...least there was no queue there..hehe
and how glad i was to go inside..

The doorman was incredibly friendly..took a 'act-cute' shot with me, making a great start for the day!

We went further into the shop and saw the candy section..as well as a muppets workshop...can build ur very own muppet!

The second level was separated into the boy's and girl's section...this doll house for example...is the girl's section...and the sports cars...for the boys..

But this was for everyone!

There was so much to see..but jus took photos of a few interesting and memorable toys seen in the  store itself..

The tour in the toy store was fun! As we walked out, saw the queue outside the apple store was gone, so we went in to take a look..there were lots of ppl down there! some ppl looking for nice stuff to buy, while the staff there helping the customers out...its amazing how this little shop attracted so many ppl with their products...at 10am plus in the morning...and since we were there, we had our play with the new ipad2...ok lah...its fun...but i won't spend so much $$ to get it as entertainment or self use...its a better learning tool for kids in school i reckon.

[info]okinawa_teru
Day 2 in New York, a cold morning, went to the Mac next to Rockerfeller Subway station to get our breakfast. We took our drink along the way,  for keeping our hands warm too.

We headed to Sephora first, to get some moisturizer...it was really dry there. The staff was really friendly, even gave me a bottle of show foam for free...as it was my birthday month...haha...lucky!
From there, we went to the subway station and we saw a these officers and their ride...as they were talking away, the tourists(including me) went beside them to take photos of their ride...i dun even know why they were there..they were not even looking or patrolling around, just talking to each other loh..what happens if someone shouts:"Help! Thief!" Will they really start galloping  to chase after the thief? or carry on drinking their morning coffee?

Our first stop was to the ferry station. We were not the earliest batch to take the ferry so there were lots of ppl crowding there to get on the free ferry. It does not bring us to the Liberty Island, but it passes by. Oh well, its better than nothing. least we get to see this trademark of NY City. Read up a bit of the history of the Statue of Liberty as in the movie National Treasure, it was mentioned that there were 3 in the world. One of it is in New York, while the other 2 is in France. Pretty interesting history it went thru.

The ferry came, we hopped on, and off we go! We went onto the deck where we could catch a good view of the Statue. I found some similarity in Americans--Kiasuism....they too, pushed and made "tsk" sounds whenever there were folks who walked faster than them to get on the deck..i jus watched them and laughed in my heart...so kiasu leh! haha

Going onto the deck was a good choice. The view on the deck was marvelous! Except for the super strong and cold wind..had to put on gloves and my hood jus to prevent myself not to freeze to death on the deck.

The weather was great on the trip towards the statue, Got a good view of the Brooklyn Bridge as well. But when we took the ferry back, grey clouds started to form...was pretty worried that it will rain today too..

We headed to Battery Park, which is beside the ferry terminal. We were lucky to be there around early lunchtime for the street performers. Heard from ZX who was here a few days ago that she was pulled by one of them to take photo! of course she paid for it..and gave me a warning about them..well i sure have no idea of how they treat tourists, they were all busy eating lunch when we got there, so we got to enjoy the scenery there in the park.

There were also signs of Spring too...

There are many attractions of historic values of the US in the park, we didnt have the patience to wait in the long queue, so we jus look-see and then move on.

This one was meaningful ..

We walked out of the park via the main entrance, heading towards Wall Street. Along the way, there were many majestic and classic-looking buildings. They were mostly museums and embassies.

Wall Street was filled with groups of tourists when we got there...and everyone 'took turns' to take their photo with the Charging bull....I too...but then i guess i was too excited at that time, that i charged a little too fast towards the bull and ended up with a loud 'Clank' sound on my head as it knocked against the metal horns of the bull...i heard some 'ouch' from the sides but i was too pai seh to turn and look...told YJ to take the pic quickly and we zoomed off before the next group of tourists came...

The buildings at Wall street was suffocating...i feel...they were all tall and somehow 'strict'..standing side by side closely to one another...

Well for folks who also loves the movie National Treasure, you should know where and what is this place! The final location of the hidden treasure! haha.. is there really a Parkington Lane beneath the church? I'm not sure...dun dare to anyhow roam around...later kenna sh*t loh...
anyways we went in to take a look...ah....nicholas cage was here before!!! haha!

I love the stained glass in the church. They were getting ready for some event and was asking ppl ot sit down...we went out as the crowd got larger.

Not far away from the church, we saw the world trade center.
...still in the process of building...

Went into the St Paul's Chapel to take a look as well..it was one of the few historic architectures which survived the 911 incident. It was also used as a temporary shelter for those who were injured or hurt then. Many photographs were put on display inside the chapel to show how was it like during that time and how other states and countries contributed to help the survivors.

Next we headed to Brooklyn Bridge...along the way, there were very nice architectural buildings around that area. We went thru a park with a fountain-like arrangement in it too...beside this park was city hall.

Cherry blossoms have yet to bloom....haiz...all yellow!!!

The weather was super good! Sunny day with cold wind! Many tourists came to the Brooklyn bridge to see this historical bridge, locals were jogging and cycling there..we were enjoying the wonderful  weather while walking further to the middle of the bridge.

Vehicles running beneath the bridge..

Halfway on the bridge, we turned back. Along the way, we saw this tall building with a golden statue on it...with the sunlight so bright, the statue was glaring even from this far!

We hurriedly look for a place to rest..but more importantly, we need to loo....haha...and Dunkin Donuts was ard the corner, so in we went! And since we were already there, we bought something to fill our stomachs too. Sat by the window to rest and eat...watched ppl walked by...pretty interesting to watch all kinds of ppl and cars to pass by... many thoughts really went thru my mind..no wonder they say if u're looking for new ideas or inspirations, it is good to sit by the window...

Headed to the Seaport to have a better view of the whole of Brooklyn bridge. They have shops there for shopping too..we stopped by there and got something exciting for tomorrow!!!

The view here was great! With the sea breeze blowing, the sun shining...relaxing place for a busy city like NY.

Decided to stay till evening to see the bridge light up...ate dinner there too...it was the most expensive and gross dinner we ate in NY..chinese food somemore!! si buay jia lat...cannot make it!

The night view is good for folks who want to propose or also for a romantic date! hmmmm...coming alone would be a little sad...no one to share this wonderful view with...

We got to know a couple who was also there for holiday...they were figuring how to use their new Panasonic lumix camera...and we helped them out while taking photos there..

Walking back to the subway, we saw this creative building that tells us the time...hope it is using solar power...

The alighted at the subway outside Times Square...This ad attracted my attention...however they put the mini cooper up there, it was a good idea! There was another one in blue on another building nearby..like the blue one better.

As it was still early, we went into this place! Well there are many fun stuff we saw inside, but i lazy to write one by one..the pics says all..

21 March 2011--The Big Apple/Museum of Natural History/Washington Square Park/DowntownSoHo/Chinatown
snowman
[info]okinawa_teru
Our destination is The Big Apple, New York.
Several things came into my mind: Broadway performances, the restaurant New York New York, street and underground performances, many drama serials and movies which featured this city where the plot unfolds, etc...

I thought of many things while on the way there, however my mind doesn't seem to be much excited about it.
Upon our arrival at the LaGuardia airport, YJ and I stepped out to hail a cab...yup...their taxis are all yellow...and their meter jumps are similar to Singapore's....haha...Ohio's meter is different...it jumps very fast and the jump is super high somemore! that was  the first culture shock i got the other time when i first reached Ohio..hehe

In the cab, there was a mini screen at the back of the driver's seat, showing tv programs and also a navigator indicating our location and destination. Our driver was a friendly ojisan...he's from Puerto Rico, therefore speaking with a strong Spanish accent...very funny guy too. He asked where are we from...

Me: "We're from Singapore."
Ojisan: "Oh! That's a wonderful place!...Is it part of China?"
Me: "er...no...it's a small country that is next to Malaysia."
Ojisan: "ah...that place have mountains?"
Me: "more like hills..."
Ojisan: "oh! it must be good for fishing then."
Me: "ah..haha....."(-__-")

There was a huge jam on the way, we were stuck at one spot for almost 30 mins. It also started drizzling..
The ojisan was also a bit fed-up...so he 'cut lanes' and horned the other vehicles a lot...there were a lot of noise loh..i guess its very normal to b stuck in a morning jam for ppl in NY...but after the jam, we went through shortcut lanes and got to the hotel in less than 10 mins.

We checked into Cassa hotel. The hotel reception was very friendly and helpful. The hotel looks modern and hip too! Was pleased when i stepped into the room.

But the view outside the window flop..

YJ was more interested in this...haha.

Our initial plan was to go Washington Square Park, but bcos of the rain, there was a change in plans....we decided to check with the staff see if there's anywhere indoors we can go...he gave us a super useful map, showing the subway stations and places we can visit. He recommended this place

The museum was not far from our hotel, took the Metro subway there..hmm their subway is very much like the ones that we see in the movies....

It was an interesting experience taking their subway. This was also the museum where the movie Night in the Museum took place! Can't wait to see Rex and Dum Dum!!!

Good thing the entrance and the station is connected. We joined in the line to get our entrance tickets of the museum. Quite surprised with the huge crowd here on a cold Monday morning.  Starting to regret not bringing my coat already (>.<)

There were many signage around the museum, directing visitors to the different areas...we came across these...esp with the one with Big Bang...haha...

There were showrooms displaying researches on volcanoes, space and prehistoric age...and then, we found Rex!

The prehistoric exhibits were just amazing! For a moment, i thought Oda Eichirou might even have been here before! All these animals are like skeletons from ONE PIECE Strong World!!

This gallery is filled with miniatures..however, the name of this gallery reminds me of Singapore.....

This is a musical instrument made out from a shell by ancient ppl...but for ONE PIECE fans, this is like a treasure from Sky Pier...a memory dial~~!

And at the end of this gallery, we found Dum Dum!!!

As we walked thru the other galleries, i believe Oda sensei been here before...

The exterior of the museum is very special. Is a small scale of our solar system.

We left the museum at around noon time after a simple lunch at the food court in the museum. The sky is clearing, it was cooling with a little drizzle while walking along the path towards the subway...we decided to head to Washington Square park.

There are cherry blossoms in this park...but i tink i came at the wrong time..haiz...the fountain is also not on!!! it is supposed to be like this~~

Luckily the Arc de Triomphe is there..no need to go Paris to see...but of course, if can go and see the real one also not bad lah..haha

We walked through the park and headed towards downtown SoHo, the popular shopping district in NY. I was mesmerized by the architectural along the way...They were all packed together of different heights and designs and 真的有种不协调的美。

Just beside Chinatown, is Little Italy. Beside this structure was a 观音庙!

We ate our dinner in a Chinese restaurant and headed back to the hotel via subway. My legs were aching when i got back to the hotel...fell asleep very soon...haha

snowman
[info]okinawa_teru

每一年的今天都过得不一样;

不禁揪了一下,想起了去年;

Fighting! \(^0^)/

COSI Science Centre
snowman
[info]okinawa_teru
My last trip to the science center was with my pri 5 students...being one of the teacher-in-charge of taking them there for a learning journey...it never came across my mind that i will be going to this place in Ohio at 7 plus in the evening..

There was an event going on...some sort of family day event..folks here are quite family-orientated. Since we have not been to the Science center, we decided to join in the fun.

At the entrance, there was a cubed Christmas tree. It's nice when shone under the spotlight...too bad my camera cannot capture it clearly.

We walked as fast as we could into the center as the wind is blowing til my cheeks are freezing...the place was filled with people!

Ah...this model on the ceiling attracted me the most...should have made something like tat for my art project in sec sch O levels...smaller version de...this is very big! made of wired mash.

Went into another zone where there were plastic balls around to play with...

Pretty interesting things we saw that night. Hope when spring comes we can see more events like this organized.

Chirstmas 2010-California Los Angeles Little Tokyo & Koreatown
snowman
[info]okinawa_teru
Exploring journey to Little Tokyo and Koreatown!! Went to take the Metro, and pass by this grand-looking station...

Walked quite a bit before we saw this:

A symbolic structure...very obvious...we reached!!! All the architectural buildings are so much alike the ones in Japan!

Even the small alleys...made me really excited!!!

Didn't expect to find this shop here...in LA...a bit shocking!! Chatted with the 店长a little...and got to know that they have cosplay events here every year as well!! Wah...super happening loh...LA...

The reason we went into CURE is because we were queuing up for lunch, waiting for our number to be called in this shop:

...and indeed it was worth the wait...traditional japanese ramen! The gyoza is superb!

There was a funny incident during our wait outside this shop...many asians were waiting outside this shop...which is along one of the main roads....there was a car with a young driver which wanted to parallel park into a space meters away from this shop. A girl who is a friend of his was standing at the lot to 'chop' that space. Suddenly, another car with a lady driver came along, trying to get into that parking lot. She almost knocked down the girl who is standing at the parking lot just to park ...the lady driver and the girl started arguing in front of that shop...well, they did not shout...just argued about who should get the parking lot...and the rest of us, who were waiting for our call number, all had a good laugh at this small 'drama'....guess who won?

After our lunch, we walked down the street of Lttle Tokyo, bought a lot of stuff! Mailed some back to our place somemore!
Bought Mochi at this shop, which i'm glad that we did...

Walked to another building and we found this store!!!! My favorite store!!! And right below it was a super market, where we bought somemore stuff!!

We headed towards our next destination--Koreatown!

The signboards and the streets were all in Korean! I can't read it...but looking at it already feel like i'm in Korea le...haha

Went into this shopping mall...looks 90% like Jurong Point! the other 10% difference is that the whole mall is filled wit
h Koreans!

Bought some utensils from the departmental store...the auntie was very nice! She even gave us a calendar for free! Kamsahamida~~~

Passed by this CD shop i the mall...a thought went thru my mind...and i am glad i went into the shop...bought this!!

Went to the post office to mail another batch of stuff back..haha...we really bought quite a lot...hahah..the ppl here are all very friendly! Hope to come here again...

Chirstmas 2010-California Los Angeles Universal Studios
snowman
[info]okinawa_teru

Came early in the morning, but there was already a large crowd. We were greeted by a short Christmas performance of the Grinch, den the first place we went to is:

After the Shrek, we decided to go photo-taking with the 'catch of the day':

I love this Simpsons ride!!!

I didn't thought of seeing the Doc from Back to the Future here!
Micheal J Fox ~~

We joined in the Studio tour...and i'm glad that we did! Saw filming areas and scenes of dramas and movies! There is even a 3D virtual King Kong experience!

They showed how they created flooding scenes in a movie...one signal and water came pouring in!

A plane crash scene...the scene too big! i only took part of it...

This whole studio is so big that there were streets inside, naming after famous directors.

Met the Grinch again, caroling away for us!

Went for this after the studio tour...ah xia...remember Edward Furlong? He was inside this!!!

I was admiring this building...looks really grand....den i realized it was the restrooms...(-__-'')

The water performance!

Caught this little fella walking around unguarded..so quickly took a shot with it!

The Christmas tree here...with a little twist...very Seuss! The staff here are preparing for the lighting up of the tree later in the evening.

Most of the ppl who took photo here is because of the cute dog!

Flintstones cafe...

Went for the show on how they put special effects into their films...super interesting!

And the animal show was ok lah...the dogs were funny!

We stayed for the lighting of the Christmas tree, and left right after that as the crowd is getting larger....headed out to the shopping arcade beside universal studios.

The neon lights are eye-catching! But the crowd seems to be never-ending..haiz...

After dinner, we walked back to wait for our shuttle bus...on the way, we saw this big transparent container, with someone 'flying' inside..pretty cool the way they do that.

Went by this store selling sweets too...look at all the jelly beans! They even made a  statue of Marilyn Monroe out of Jelly beans!

Street performers were everywhere, keeping the visitors entertained in one way or another...wah...really
